‘They’ told you that social media marketing is an awesome way to drive a boatload of free targeted traffic to your websites in record speed…

You have now spent weeks adding a huge list of potential buyers to your friends on Myspace, Facebook and Twitter. You’re telling all your friends about your wonderful products. But why haven’t YOU gotten the massive boost in website traffic that ‘they’ are getting. And why haven’t your friends become your buyers?

Why?

You need to realize this simple critical fact – Social networking sites are for SOCIALIZING! (Really?)

The millions of users who sign up to participate in these social networking sites DO NOT join with the intention to buy anything. They don’t expect to be sold to, and they don’t like people trying to sell them products. They’re just there to meet new, interesting people, make some friends and have some fun.

So how in the world are you ever going to sell to them then?

Get this; people don’t buy from businesses and corporations (Shock Horror)!

People buy from PEOPLE!

(This concept is especially important when marketing on social media sites.)

Yes! You want to add as many friends as you can. But make sure they’re not just a number to you, and you’re not just a number to them.

You need to first make friends and build relationships before you can throw some of your links and websites at them. You need to take a more SUBTLE and HUMAN approach when marketing on these sites. You need to be yourself. So tell people who you are, build that connection, and build trust. Get people to like you, and THEN they will buy from you.

So here’s the simple secret.

Are you ready?

Secret – You have to be a PERSON and not a BUSINESS!

The social media marketing niche is full of hype pipers and hope dopes. Everyday I get a “product launch” email touting the latest Wordpress plugin, software app or marketing system, promising BIG traffic or quit-your-day-job ROI.

If you have been around (the internet marketing scene) for even a few months you’ll know just what I am talking about. I am at the point where I am more interested in the way the product is being marketed than what the prodcut is.

I have settled in to a few (mostly free) web 2.0 tools that make my social media marketing work.

So, shut up and tell you what they are already, right? Got it…

VIDEO SYNDICATION

The big gun in video submission is, of course, Traffic Geyser. This is a great service and, besides taking hours to set up and being priced on the high end, works very well at getting you and your silly videos plastered all over the web. However, recently I stumbled upon a free video submission service called TubeMogul that I like quite well, thank you very much.

TubeMogul allows for automated submission to the 12 big video sites all at once. The interface is super-simple. It allows you to add a title, description, tags and category setting to you video. And you can upload as many videos as you want for nada (FREE!).

Check it out at TubeMogul.com.

SOCIAL MEDIA SUBMITTING AND BOOKMARKING

Some of the new folks get confused here so let me briefly explain… Social media marketing calls for lots of “submitting”. One of the mainstays is submitting your post (your story, your article whatever you call your content) to a social media site.

There are really 2 types of sites for post submission. There’s the social bookmarking sites like del.icio.us and technorati which just want you to primarily submit a link and tag. There’s not much voting or browsing of these “bookmarks” going on after you submit.

Then there’s the social news sites like Digg and Propeller. These sites want your link and tags also but you will also need to provide a good description of you post and hope that other vote it up.

So, with that out of the way… On to the freebie.

I have used a few of the paid tools out there to automatically submit to both the social bookmarking sites and the social news sites and, in my opinion, the free tool at SocialMarker.com works better than all of them. You just input your post data, check the sites you want to submit to and arrow through the submissions. “That was easy!”

KEYWORD RESEARCH

Yes, I still do keyword research, I think it is important to keep track of your main keywords and look for variations as new topics come up. I use the free tool from the giant keyword service called Keyword Discovery. The free tool works great for bloggers who are not building 10,000 word PPC campaigns.

IMAGE EDITING

By far, the service I use the most is picnik.com. I always have to crop, resize, fix, etc. the images I need to use. This online editor makes it quick and easy.

VIDEO CAPTURE AND EDITING

Well, this may be a bit advanced for the new folks but just in case you are ready to stick your toes into the video pond, here’s a couple of free tools you’ll need.

First, you will need a good screen capture software. I like the tools from TechSmith, either Camtasia (V3 is free right now) or JingProject.

Once you have you fancy screen capture then head over to Jumpcut.com and start editing. This is an awesome free online editing software that should cost big bucks.

So, there you have it…

The list is not long but, trust me, these free tools will get you f-a-a-a-r in your social media marketing endeavors.

You can try lots of other similar free marketing software, tools and systems; there is an endless number of them that’s for sure.

This is what has worked (and continues to work) for me. Enjoy!

Alli, the new over-the-counter brand of the prescription drug Xenical from Glaxo-SmithKline, is being marketed by a new, strategic mix of personalized messages. Their marketers understand both the emergence and importance of social networking as a new marketing tool, as evidenced in their latest television commercial. They get it.

They are now able to grasp the concept of social media networking as a tool for viral marketing. What is particularly interesting, is that neither of these terms were even included in general marketing vocabulary and strategic thinking until just recently.

The marketing professionals employed by the pharmaceutical giant have created a huge buzz surrounding their new product while addressing a huge and hungry market; no puns intended! Their latest ad vividly displays the power of word-of-mouth viral marketing. The ad focuses upon people conversing via email, extolling the benefits of this new product, Alli. The ad then begins to accelerate the layering of these images so that we can more easily picture the word-of-mouth actiivity and viral growth of their message. It works! Their message connects with us and they understand how and why.

At his informative and highly respected blog DoshDosh, Maki has posted an impressive, detailed listing of forty-seven new social media sites. Brandon Fritz, writer for Kolbrener, has also assembled an amazing list of fifty social media sites further categorized by market. These social networking site lists will continue to grow and change over time.

Certainly, as is being proven with the current political drama unfolding in cyberspace: Marketing and the timely dissemination of relevant information is evolving beyond anything previously available or conceivable, and will continue its development.

Social networking is now viewed as a legitimate means of strategic marketing. How will your sales be impacted by the development of new social media and viral marketing tools?

We need to be paying attention to these revolutionary developments, learning new selling skills to take advantage of this growing phenomenon as the sales cycle in most industries is certainly being impacted.

Sales strategies are becoming more conversational as social media marketing unfolds. Perhaps the marketing mainstream is finally grasping what he direct marketers have known for some time; that selling is most effective when it is made to be personal and conversational.

Relationships continue to win sales. Salespeople who make the time to understand their customers and their needs, connecting with them, will sell more and have many more satisfied, referral-providing, long-term customers than those who look only for a quick sale. Which path are you following?

- Social bookmarks created get indexed by search engines very quickly.

- Social bookmarks pages appear in SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages) in a short span of time whereas a website may take anywhere from three to six months to get in top ranks

If you operate a business in a city as large as Toronto, you know how hard it is to stand out from the crowd. Social media marketing (SMM) can give you the edge.

With a population of over 5 million in the GTA, the market is huge, but so is the competition. Social media marketing offers an affordable and relatively easy marketing solution. The key is to learn how to do it right. Social media marketing training can teach you how to harness the power of social media.

The Value of Social Media Marketing

Social media marketing is a multi-channel approach to marketing. It uses social media sites, social bookmarking, blogging and articles to help generate interest in your business. It’s really like the next incarnation of word-of-mouth marketing. Instead of people chatting about you, they are linking to you and sharing those links with friends.

Consider an example:

Social media marketing is certainly a powerful marketing tool. This strategy has proven its effectiveness for quite a long time. Social media marketing has been an excellent marketing tool even under the worst economic conditions. Today social media marketing is said to be “the best way to spread good news under the worst conditions”.  From getting links to your website to attaining international exposure to your business, social media marketing has an important role in the marketing strategy of any business. Like any other marketing strategy, social media marketing also requires proper planning and appropriate execution of the plan. This marketing strategy without proper planning and execution will be a complete waste of time and may ruin your business too. This article will help you to plan and execute social media marketing in the right way.

The Non-Spammy Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking of your website to the popular social networks like dig and stumbleupon is a great strategy to boost the traffic flow. Many people do a mistake by over-doing social bookmarking with a single user account, which will result in the bookmarks getting flagged as spam. Ignoring this warning and continuing this activity will eventually end up with your IP address getting blocked. Hence you won’t be able to use this strategy from that particular IP address. Moreover, all the time spent in bookmarking your website will be wasted. Hence it is always good to have different user accounts to bookmark your website over a prolonged period of time.

The Well Customized Social Media Profiles

Social media websites like facebook are greatly leveraged today for the marketing campaigns. You must have noted that President Obama made use of this strategy in his election campaigns. As every social media marketer is getting into these social networking sites, it is very much important to highlight your profile. Thankfully, there are lots of customization options available with these social networking websites to highlight your profiles. Another important thing to be noted is to create a fully complete profile with your real name and a few links to the recommended products in your website.

Active Participation in the Social Networks

Social media marketing is not a one time process. For instance, let’s take the example of marketing through the social networks like facebook. To get noticed in the social networking crowd, your profile should be active. All the social media profiles should be updated with some content frequently. Fresh, updated content is always loved by the search engine bots. Active participation also includes forum postings, commenting and participation in polls.

Getting Professional assistance for Social Media Marketing

The social media marketing services provided by them will save your time. Moreover, with their expertise in social media marketing, they can create a great social media marketing plan that best suits your websites marketing needs.

The internet has changed the way we do business-indeed, our whole society–in ways unthinkable even ten short years ago. The sheer connectedness of the World Wide Web is what wowed people then, and still does today. But the “web” is no longer just a collection of servers talking to each other, with all the content controlled by a handful of people who understand how to create HTML pages. Now everybody can connect to the entire world all by themselves, using any number of social networking sites that have the power to create overnight sensations.

Social media marketing capitalizes on the popularity and reach of sites like FaceBook, MySpace, Twitter, Blogger, Flickr, and dozens of others to build communities of common interest. Blogs, chat forums, collaborative sites like Wikipedia, opinion or review sites like ZDnet, educational or tutorial sites like WebMonkey, or gaming and other entertainment sites have the capacity to draw huge audiences all wanting specific things. Companies who create sub-communities within existing communities such as MySpace, or create a new “destination” offering useful information, can lift their brand awareness without overtly marketing their products.

Daily or weekly blogs offer useful information and provide a reason for visitors to come back often. Many times, a product’s users, like Harley Davidson enthusiasts or skiers who like a particular manufacturer’s skis, like to come together to discuss the pros and cons, the ways they have customized their products, or new ways to use them. These communities are self-sustaining; the manufacturer merely needs to provide the forum and keep order, while providing new content as needed.

Targeted advertising on established sites can return high value for the marketing dollar with little to no additional effort by a company to establish the forum in the first place. However, taking a proactive role in creating a community gives a company more control over its look and feel and content, reducing the chances of illegal uses of the company’s logo or product images degrading the brand.

If you thought that MySpace was just for chatty teenagers, think again. Smart companies once embraced the web itself as progressive; now they must continue to think outside the box to capitalize on the full power of social media marketing, or miss out on some golden opportunities.
